WGBI: PROMOTING DIVERSITY AND THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The battery industry plays a vital role in the global energy transition, but it still faces significant challenges in terms of diversity and inclusion. To help change this scenario, Women in the Global Battery Industry (WGBI) was created with the goal of supporting and empowering women in the sector, providing opportunities for networking, learning and professional growth.

The battery industry plays a vital role in the global energy transition, but it still faces significant challenges in terms of diversity and inclusion. To help change this scenario,

Women in the Global Battery Industry (WGBI) was created with the goal of supporting and empowering women in the sector, providing opportunities for networking, learning and

professional growth.

WHAT IS WGBI?

WGBI is an international organization dedicated to promoting the presence of women in the battery industry. Its focus is on creating a community that encourages collaboration,

career development and knowledge sharing.

The organization seeks to reduce the barriers that have historically hindered women’s participation in the sector, providing tools for their professional advancement.

OBJECTIVES AND STRUCTURE

The WGBI is based on four fundamental pillars:

• Networking: Facilitates connections between industry professionals, promoting events and opportunities for interaction to strengthen the female support network.

• Mentoring: Connects experienced women with emerging professionals, promoting exchanges that help develop skills and confidence.

• Education: Provides access to high-quality content, including webinars, lectures and discussions on industry challenges and trends.

• Professional Development: Provides opportunities for women to develop leadership and grow within the industry.

WGBI operates globally but also seeks to meet regional needs through the creation of local chapters, such as the Latin American Chapter, which aims to strengthen female

participation in the region.

THE LATIN AMERICAN CHAPTER OF THE WGBI AND ITS LEADERSHIP

The creation of the Latin American Chapter of the WGBI marks a strategic moment for the inclusion and development of women in the battery industry in the region.

Latin America faces specific challenges, such as the lack of connection between academia and industry and the low representation of women in technical sectors.

Given this scenario, the WGBI LATAM was created to promote the visibility of professionals already working in the industry, encourage new leaders and promote training and mentoring initiatives.

ITEMM’s Grace Rocha is the leader of the new WGBI Latin American Chapter

Leading this new chapter is Grace Rocha, a chemical engineer with a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. With a five-year career in the battery industry, Grace began her career as an intern at ITEMM (Edson Mororó Moura Institute of Technology), where she gained technical knowledge and practical experience in the sector.

She currently works as a researcher and has represented the company at international technical forums, where she noticed the significant absence of women in these spaces.

Her experience at these events, and in the industry as a whole, motivated her to seek more diversity in the sector. As the leader of WGBI LATAM, her goal is to create a support network that helps women enter and thrive in the industry, strengthening female representation in an environment historically dominated by men.

The chapter’s focus includes holding regional events, strengthening partnerships between companies and universities, and promoting the inclusion of women in research and technological development in the battery sector.

OPPORTUNITIES AND BENEFITS FOR WOMEN IN THE INDUSTRY

Women who become members of the WGBI have access to a range of opportunities that can boost their careers. Key benefits include:

• Access to a global network of professionals in the battery industry.

• Participation in exclusive events focused on developing technical and leadership skills.

• Opportunity to join mentoring programs, both as a mentor and as a mentee.

• Engagement in initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion in the industry.

The battery industry is expanding, and with it, there is an increasing space for new female leaders. Through programs like

WGBI’s, more women can be empowered and encouraged to occupy prominent positions,

contributing to a more innovative and diverse sector.

WGBI’s initiative represents a necessary transformation for the market, creating a more inclusive and equitable ecosystem. Diversity of perspectives and experiences has the potential to drive more creative and sustainable solutions to the challenges of the future of energy.
